Breaking the Dependency: 3D Scanning, Reverse Engineering, and the Engineering Capability to Build What Others Won't
Every plant has them. Components that are no longer in production. Parts with lead times measured in months, not weeks. Spare parts priced at multiples of what fabrication should cost, because the manufacturer knows there is no alternative. Equipment where the original drawings either never existed, were never handed over, or have been lost over decades of operation.
This is not a procurement problem. It is an engineering problem — and it has an engineering solution.
OEM dependency is not a condition plants are born with. It is one they accumulate, gradually, every time a critical component is sourced from a single supplier without an alternative being developed.
The starting point is always the physical asset. Alvand Technic's scanning teams visit the plant and capture the component — worn, modified, or intact — in sub-millimeter point cloud data. From that scan, our engineers reconstruct the full technical drawing set. Not a copy of the original: a verified, dimensioned, fabrication-ready drawing that reflects the part as it actually exists, with any wear or modification accurately documented.
That is where most reverse engineering stops. We go further. If the original component had a recurring failure mode — a stress concentration, a material choice that degraded prematurely, a geometry that accelerated wear — we use FEA and CFD simulation to redesign before we fabricate. The replacement part is not just geometrically equivalent to the original. It is often better.
A reverse-engineered part that simply replicates the original replicates its failure mode as well. The engineering value is in understanding why the original failed — and correcting it.
The fabrication follows from the engineering. Our facility operates under ISO 9001 and EN 1090-2 certification, with full material traceability from mill certificate to finished component. Every critical spare undergoes dimensional verification against the original scan before it leaves the facility. Factory Acceptance Testing is documented and provided to the client alongside the technical drawings; so that the next time the part is needed, the documentation exists.
Pricing is typically 20 to 40 percent below OEM. Lead times are controlled by the manufacturing schedule, not by a supplier's order queue. And the plant leaves the engagement with something it did not have before: ownership of the technical documentation for its own equipment.
